CAMOUFLAGE™ COATING FOR ECMO AND PERFUSION DEVICES

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a critical life support technique for patients with severe heart and/or lung problems, particularly in cases where conventional therapies have failed. The ECMO system temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs by oxygenating blood outside the body. Despite its life-saving capabilities, ECMO carries the risk of blood clot formation.

Smart Reactors’ Camouflage™ coating addresses this risk by providing a hemocompatible surface for ECMO and CPB (cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO tubing/machine). This coating technology provides a hemocompatible surface by reducing the coagulation cascade and enhances the long-term hemocompatibility of these devices.

Fig. 1 Camouflage™ coating exhibits excellent gas exchange properties with minimal impact on oxygen and carbon dioxide rates

Thrombin–antithrombin (TAT), white blood cells, PMN elastase levels were evaluated on Camouflage™ coated perfusion tubing.

Fig 1. The reduced TAT levels observed with Smart Reactors coatings, compared Phosphorylcholine and Albumin, demonstrating superior performance in minimizing clot formation.

Fig 2. Smart Reactors Camouflage™ coating shows minimal white blond cell (WBC) adhesion, sustaining overall WBC levels. In contrast, PC and Albumin coatings show reduced WBC levels due to excessive cell attachment.

Fig 3. Reduced PMN elastase levels with Smart Reactors Camouflage suggest reduced risk of triggering inflammatory responses compared to PC and Albumin coatings.
